Elmamketik – Mi’kmaq for Bell’s Point
“The place where the sand extends away from”
During the 19th and early 20th century, this area at Bell’s Point, being the closest to Cape Tormentine, NB, known as the Abegweit Passage became the main “traverse” for maintaining commerce between the island and the rest of Canada. Thus, the appropriate name “Cape Traverse.”
The local, intrepid mariners worked each winter to keep this route operational by using iceboats as the only means of contact and commerce across the treacherous Northumberland Strait. This often needed to be done during hazardous and life-threatening passages.
Sunset Dunes was created as a new community and developed by local businessman, Shaun MacIsaac in 2003. He originally envisioned this to be a spectacular, waterfront, vacation cottage subdivision. Twenty years later, it is now a premiere Prince Edward Island subdivision that is largely populated with year-round residents who enjoy the natural, serene lifestyle that this community offers in abundance.
About the Sunset Dunes PEI Homeowners Association
Sunset Dunes PEI Homeowners Association (SDPEIHOA) was established in 2021 as a managed community that is located in the historic Cape Traverse area on the southern shore of Prince Edward Island.
SDPEIHOA is comprised of 60 original lots with address locations on Campbell’s Way, Cape Traverse, PE, C0B 1X0. As a private homeowners association, we are governed by Letters Patent, By-Laws, and Restrictive Covenants (collectively “Governing Documents”). We elect our own Board of Directors from our lot owners and the Board manages the affairs of the Association on behalf of our members. Our Annual meetings are to be held in August and regularly scheduled board meetings are held throughout the year.
