Sunset Dunes Coastal Hazard Assessment

A Coastal Hazard Assessment for the Sunset Dunes PEI HOA was conducted by the Province of PEI this past spring, 2022 as part of a coastal Buffer Zone study prioritized under Resolution 4 during the 2021 Sunset Dunes HOA Annual General Meeting.  The objective of this study was to provide property owners with information regarding coastal buffer zone protection requirements as well as identify areas vulnerable to erosion and or flooding.

You can find the results of the Coastal Hazard Assessment (CHA) for PID 209916 including maps of the properties in the Member area.

Please note that, as per Public Safety Canada’s Guidelines for the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements, any new development located within an area identified as flood risk is not eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) unless appropriate measures have been taken during the design and construction of the structure to protect it again the effects of a 100-year flood (referred to as the coastal floodplain).  The coastal floodplain (identified as the high hazard area) has been delineated for the entirety of the province. For more information on coastal hazards, please visit www.princeedwardisland.ca/coastalhazards.

To learn more about coastal hazards in PEI and what you can do to protect your home, you can access the PEI Coastal Property Guide and/or take a free, online course called Protecting PEI Homes from Flooding and Erosion. This course has been developed by the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, in partnership with the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action and the University of Prince Edward Island’s ClimateSense program.

Hope this is helpful information for you – and a BIG shout out to Maurice Roy who spearheaded this effort!
